Well, most peole like to know if an area is safe or not before moving there. Guess you just take your chances blindly.

Kind of a distorted view of what safe means considering you're more likely to be harmed or die in a car accident than through criminal activity. A map showing number of traffic accidents, injuries, and deaths would be more relevant. Also your crime map doesn't account for population density. For that it would need to show crimes per a specified number of residents.
I'm not blind but I'm not paranoid either.

I can take precautions in driving too but that is another issue. I have lived in very good neighborhoods and some bad ones. I prefer the good ones where I did not suffer multiple breakins, see a guy shooting up a house right down the street in broad daylight, cars crashing while fleeing the police, hookers trundling home at dawn and other such joys of urban life. BTW the population density was not significantly different.
