In some parts, especially when you get close to the NC border. I grew up near the Richmond area there is still some southerness here.

The further you get from I95,I81 & I64 (give 288 a few more years) southern culture increases exponentially. You'll know you are in a southern county when you see the baby chick festival being held in the parking lot in front of an IGA or a Tractor Supply in the Spring.

A lot of it depends on what part of VA you're in. If you're in the Southwest part of the state, definitely, if you're in NOVA, not so much. Case in point, my best friend lives in NOVA part-time due to work and college, and the times I've gone up to visit, it never fails, at LEAST one store, restaurant, something that we go to, someone will ask me where I'm from because I have a very strong Southern accent. Down here, I do get asked occasionally, but, not like I do if you go up around DC/NOVA/MD.

On frequent visits to DC I often find it funny that the first time I encounter friendly people at gas stations, etc on my way back home I realize that I am
entering VA again! At least they don't slam doors in your face!

Yes Virginia is a decidedly southern state in every way possible. Simply because people from other places move here matters not in how southern Virginia is. Southerness is in the water and soil in Virginia and will never change no matter how many outsiders move here. This is what some fail to realize, being southern isn't just some monuments or battlefields or streets named after generals. It's a way of life and a distinct culture all it's own. Always has been, always will be.

It's changed a lot. As a kid visiting from CA in the mid-60s even Northern VA felt Southern to me. Grits for breakfast and people with accents. When I moved here 25 years later that was all pretty much gone. Now this might as well be the suburbs of L.A. or San Francisco, though with crummier food.

CAVA, change will always happen no matter where you are. You are missing the boat here though. You need to take a tour of Mount Vernon or Arlington House and why not toss in Gunston Hall as well located in Lorton(NOVA?) The more things change the more they stay the same. Virginia's southern roots run very deep and wide. It's in the air,the water, the soil, the people and their customs. It has been this way throughout history since the birth of our country so because people who are not native to the state move here matters not. There is no escaping Virginia's unique position as southern. You can still have grits and Smithfield Ham with gravy anywhere in Virginia.

I just was there for two days for work and I tell you the food was for sure. Big difference from Pa to Va.
