That's a pretty good summary, although the only part of Virginia I'd call Northern is around D.C. and further north. The rest of the state leans pretty decisively to the south.

Its Appalachian, Southern, and some sort of Bosh-Wash hybrid all rolled into one.

Virginia is home to the south's first ever television station WTVR. Virginia is the oldest original southern colony and the first colony out of the 13. Virginia is also home to the first ever antebellum plantation in the south Shirley Plantation. It is still owned and operated by the same original family to this very day. Virginia is without any question, southern.

What is southern seems to be subjective with people disecting it region to region even by county. Yet when referring to the north there is only one catagory, northern with all applicable sterotypes applied. Northern states vary by region such as southern ones do and you might be surpised to find that people in the country up north have similar mannerism to country people in the south. I will admit that some words may vary..

Have lived in VA 30+ years I would have to consider it southern even though some parts seemed more blurred in their identity.

Even though Virginia doesnt follow all of people sterotypes with being southern that doesnt mean that its not. But i wouldnt disagree if someone called it Mid Atlantic doesnt make it non southern, New Jersey is Mid atlantic and it doesnt make it non Northern.

If any of you have really driven around in NoVa, you'd realize that it's "reach" isn't as much as one would seem. Basically take a radius of about 25 miles from the beltway, anything beyond that is pretty rural and southern IMO.

Yes, except for the areas outside of Maryland and D.C. and Richmond. I live in Hampton Roads and I still feel the southern culture. If you were born in the area you are a southerner but if you moved to the area from the north and west unfortunately you are not a southerner. I also believe that the large military presence has diluted our southern culture but hasn't destroyed it. And we also had a cross burning less than a decade ago in Hampton so YES we are southern
