I am looking for a place to retire,i was looking at home prices in cumberland.A few questions,how is the crime rate, how close to DC and williamsburg?

I don't think you're getting many answers because that is a very rural area. Just guessing, I'd say 3 to 4 hours to DC; 1.5 to 2 hours to Williamsburg. There's just really not much there. Your closest towns for shopping would be Richmond and Farmville. It's just very isolated with back roads. Wish I could tell you more.

You asked this about Cumberland MD also - which state are you looking at? (I didn't know there was a Cumberland VA)

There are some recent posts on here which are enthusiastic about Farmville, VA, which is next to Cumberland County VA. Farmville has Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney college, a new YMCA, a new movies complex, a community theater, a new bookstore, a new recreational rail-trail (the High Bridge trail). and an enormous furniture store that attracts customers from hours away.

You need to look on a map and distinguish between Cumberland County VA, Cumberland MD, and Cumberland Gap, VA. They're three completely separate places, many hours apart.
