Talking Perspective means everything.

I was born right here in Ol' Virginny. But being a Navy brat, I really can't lay claim to ANY place -- I was in 8 schools in 12 yrs.

Now having said THAT, my parents retired to Central NYS. After spending half my life in the South, then to be transplanted up Nawth was culture shock to say the least ! I lived there for 23 yrs before moving back to my birth state.

NEWSFLASH !!! Northerners & Southerners are the same but different ...... let me qualify that. Northerners think Southerners are backwards, slow, lazy, uneducated -- but nice nuff. Southerners think Northerners are stuck up, loud, touchy (& not in a GOOD way), prejudice -- but show us DA MONEY !!!

Now I've been to the Southwest (specifically NM & CA) and I've been to New England & Deep South (specifically ME, VT, FL & GA) and ya know what ??? I saw regional "prejudice" in ALL those areas.

The worst over ALL, IMHO is the Californians. It's like they were imported from an uncharted part of the solar system !!!

Learn to get along with the "locals," peeps -- your life may very well depend on them some day.

Yes, NY state has been voted the most friendly, but certainly not NYC....there are a lot of individuals moving from NY to VA, SC, FL, and quite frankly the brashness is a bit much for us to handle. Just because NYers come down here with a lot of money, fast talking and the attitude that anyone from NY are the most intelligent in the country does not mean that we're gonna like you.

I've lived in Jersey and Philly before so I'm familiar with a Yankee. I have friends that have moved from NY, but not the city or Long Island. Bottomline is, the majority of NYers are obnoxious and feel everyone else should bow down....

As a southern male, I agree that southerners are not nice to outsiders. My observation is that the roots of this behavior can be found in the fundamentalist churches that are on every corner. It is very hard for someone from NYC to blend into the fabric of the south. The people may seem friendly and easy going here but southerners don't express their true side very well. My advise to anyone planning to relocate to the south is to join a church. The church is the vehicle which allows you to enter to social
scene.

I have lived in the south my whole life, in many different states. I think the biggest problems arise when Anyone, regardless of where they may be orginally from comes to a new place and thinks it will be the same. It won't be, every where is different. The north is faster paced and the south is slower and more laid back. You wouldn't go to another country and expect things to be the same, well same thing goes when traveling throughout the states, many things are the same but the reality is that ideals differ and that is what makes this place great is because we are all different. Be open to the differences and don't judge to quickly and chances are you will be happier with the outcome.

Unhappy That is why I avoid churches...

Yes, the churches are very connected, can get you a job, can win you friends and drum up your business too, if your an business owner...

on that note, that is one reason why I avoid church, cause I find it to be nothing of what Jesus set out for his purpoes, its one big social club, and that is why many do not attend...sorry but I had to post my two cents on this!

Mean people are everywhere and there are also cultural differences too that come into play...if people can learn to say hello from time to time, open a door for someone or at least not slam it in their face or say thank you when someone opens it for them, we could then begin to at least communicate to one another in a more positive way. And on that same note, we need to also realize that some people are just not friendly, and never will be, and as long as we can live with them and respect that, we can not take things so personally...and lastly, there are rude people in all states, but we tend to notice it"more" when we are in an different state or region, what we need to do is take a step back and give the person the benefit of the doubt, at least once if not twice!~

Default Interesting thread...

I don't know who decided that New Yorkers are friendly... HA !! That had me laughing! Maybe surface friendly... but not truly, deep & heartfelt. I'm a northerner, too, btw... Jersey Girl, born & raised until the mid-90's.

I will never return to the North to live. I want to move to TEXAS !!!

Now to the person who said Southern women are mean... this is not true. They are different, you, being the Northerner, must learn to adjust to their Southern ways -- relax & take things a little slower. Its just a matter of getting to know & understand each other. I have found the people really friendly in the South, and welcoming and for the most part, polite & cordial.
