good suggestion! actually, this is more along the lines of what I was thinking of. This type of camping is known as "dispersed" camping. I was confusing "primitive" with "dispersed" . just have to be careful regarding guidelines for camping in riparian zones, and about your actual use of bodies of water. check ahead

Yes, that would be obvious minus our 3 and 5 year olds hiking with us. I guess the use of 'primitive' is different among VA and MI state parks. In MI, they set aside actual reserved camping spots for just tent campers so we don't have to camp alongside RV's. We go to the front office and pay, get our reserved number for our campsite, and drive to the campsite. You can't just plop your tent anywhere in the woods. You have to make reservations and pay...and with that comes an outhouse, lakes for swimming, a tin firehole for cooking, etc.
I'll keep looking around, but thanks for everyone's suggestions. We want to check out VA as much as possible. It's easier to do now that our kids are getting to the age where camping is fun.

Default ok then........

Again,...I am not sure about lakes..etc...BUT check out Shenandoah Natl Park. Along Skyline Drive.

It has alot of campgrounds,...some for just tents only...with firepit, facilities..etc. You pay, park, pitch tent...camp...hike...etc..etc.

go to Barnes & Noble or your favorite book store and pick up "Delormes VA Atlas" It is basically an outdoorsmans guide to everything you'll ever want to do.... From hiking trails to jeep trails, trout streams and campsites to Rapids on the James! Love it, and don't leave home without it.

With that said, check out the area just west of Bridgewater, VA on route 257 in a community called Briery Branch! Troutfishing lakes everywhere, primitive camping with showers & bathrooms, 4x4 trails, AMAZING!

Enjoy

Sounds like a fun trip.....haven't done that in years. My son and I used to primitive camp in the Pisgah National Forest in NC. We'd hike in and set up camp near a stream - no campground for us! (He always said that if we were going to camp in a campground we might as well set up camp in a subdivision - ha) Those are the best memories, just the smells and sounds of nature!!!
