Fredericksburg has the University of MARY Washington!!! However, it's not a "college town", like most are. The college is really totally seperate from the actual city and surrounding areas. For some reason, it's as if there's a feud between the residents and the students....parking is a major issue and causes many problems and hurt feelings. The surrounding neighborhoods are NOT filled with students, but will long-time residents who really resent the kids.....don't know why! It's a strange situation!

Lynchburg................Liberty University
Blacksburg/Roanoke....Virginia Tech

I believe they are among the largest universities in the state?

The only truly big city in VA is DC, which isn't even really in Virginia, although the metropolitan region is shared between VA and MD. If you want to go to school in the state while having a big city experience you might consider GMU in Fairfax County in the metro-DC.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads is pretty big, but has never really felt like much of a big city to me. It's too spread out and divided between several different municipalities without much of a shared sense of identity.

Richmond has VCU and U of R, but is only a medium size city.

The others; Lynchburg, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville are really more like large towns than actual cities.

Nothing wrong with these locales or their universities, but you did say *big cities*, so don't be expecting New York or Boston when visit these schools.

See Virginia Universities

Just counting 4-year colleges, VCU Richmond, GMU Fairfax, and VPI Blacksburg are almost equally "tied" as having the largest enrollment in the state.

Following those 3, are JMU Harrisonburg, UV Charlottesville, CW&M Williamsburg, ODU Norfolk, LU Lynchburg, and RU Radford, which are all quite large. Also MWU Fredericksburg and SU Winchester. Then there are CNU Newport News and LU Farmville.

Historically black colleges include VSU Petersburg, VUU Richmond, HU Hampton, NSU Norfolk, and St. Pauls Lawrenceville.
