Default Relocating to Ashland

So DH may be accepting a job offer in Ashland. Currently we live in SC but are originally from MD. We will be looking to rent a 3 BR house, hopefully no more than $1,500/month. We'd like to be someplace where we aren't afraid to walk the dog at night! We have a son going into the 5th grade this year. We are looking for a family friendly neighborhood (other kids to play with, friendly folks, neighbors that actually talk to each other). I have read that Short Pump is a nice area and the schools are good. We are interested in music/arts for our son more so than sports. It looks to be a 30 minute-ish commute to me which is good. We wouldn't want a longer drive than that. If anybody can suggest specific neighborhoods in SP or other areas, I would love to get some feedback.

Why not live right in Ashland? It's a cool little town. Very much an antidote to the sterile suburbs.

Living in Ashland would certainly save as far as commuting. We just don't know much about Ashland. The biggest hurdle from what I've found is not only finding an affordable rental but finding a rental home at all. I've checked Craig's List as a starting point and haven't seen much there. If there are any suggestions as far as neighborhoods, etc. I would love to hear them. Also how are the schools there. I really appreciate the feedback!!

Check out Hanover too. It's directly opposite Ashland off I-95.

He'll have great lunch options. You might want to make sure he weighs himself regularly as the food around there is phenomenal. I get off at that off-ramp from 95 just to eat whenever I'm driving by.

I would suggest using Trulia.com but you're right when I was moving to the area Ashland didn't come up in search requests. Try Glen Allen, I only know about shopping there but I love it and it's close to Ashland. Good luck!
