I was born in Staunton, did a two year stint in PA, then came back to VA and grew up in Culpeper, now back in Staunton. My Step dad is from NY, my mom is from VA. My real dad is from Sicily. Even my best friend was from New Jersey(RIP) Even though I'm from the "south" I'm about as neutral as you can get on this subject. And I don't have an accent either. As brought out people are people everywhere with the same hopes and dreams. As far as VA being southern, it's history is undeniable. But real down south states make us look "northern". I broke down in GA 10 years ago and once the tow truck driver realized I was from VA it got cold real fast if you know what I mean. And I had a native Floridian call me a yankee. It was hilarious. I explained the whole civil war thing and he said that doesn't matter any more. So I don't know. I try to get along with everyone. If I respect you I expect the same in return, if not I won't be rude I just won't go out of my way to be nice either. I actually prefer the north though. Was just in PA this past weekend.

Southerners can't seem to shut up about being Southern.

I don't refer to myself as "northern" or a "New Yorker" unless people ask me about not wearing a coat when it's 50 degrees.

Maybe I'm the exception to the rule.
I don't offer any information they usually ask me where my accent is from and then they tell me all about how things are done in Georgia.

having spent 10 years in NY i can tell you New Yorkers always talk about themselves as New Yorkers and the center of the world. and Northerners, esp those in New England and in Philadelphia and NJ always talk about being better than southerners because they believe that there is no racism in the north and only in the south and that they are better in their educational system thus they think they are superior, so they dont have to say anything about being Northern(thats their problem if they are not proud of being Northern-we are proud of beign southern however) but we say we are proud, they act like they are superior.
