Does my car have to have tags to sit in my yard in VA? (Roanoke: hoa)

I am buying a used car and it will be replacing another car.

I want to transfer the tags from one car to the other at the DMV but don't want to get stuck keeping insurance on the other car right now or leaving the tags on it.

Can I transfer tags from one vehicle to the other and leave the other car out in the driveway with no tags or is that illegal?

Seems to me that would cause problems with the police.

More than likely it will, but check with your local government's code enforcement departement first.

If you live in Roaoke City, it will indeed lead to violations, but only if someone calls you on it.

The law don't mind much. It's those busy-body neighborhood associations that come up with those types of rules.

Up in NoVA, as long as it's not parked on the street, it can be unregistered. But like Electron mentioned, if you live in a community with an HOA, they may have some rules regarding unregistered vehicles on private property.

Then check local code, HOA or not.

Roanoke's is plain as day on their website. I imagine SPotsylvania will be moreso.

Inoperable Motor Vehicles

There are guidelines in EVERY county as far as I know, housing associations or not. In Franklin County, the maximum is 5 cars per residence. I know because I have a neighbor who has previously had to remove some to stay under that limit, when the previous owner of my farm complained.

I looked up Spotsy, and they're pretty restrictive. Only one inoperable car on 1 acre or less, or 2 inoperable cars for 2 or more acres. And irregardless they have to be shielded from view.

This is a usually regulated by the county or town/city and not just HOA's. I know for a fact my neighbor in Ashburn had to keep his inoperable/untagged car in the garage because otherwise it would be towed. A friend in Sterling has had to do the same. There is a good reason for this. They really don't want old undriveable cars parked in the street or yards rusting away and that's the reality, most people would never get around to fixing them and they would just sit. This is about everyone's rights, not "busybody HOA's". That's what those that hate HOA's forget. It's not just about them.
