We visited Abingdon recently and it is one of the friendliest towns we've ever been in. Everyone was helpful and willing to share local restaurants, directions, folk lore, history, etc.
Not to say people in other areas aren't nice, but Abingdon really stuck in our minds--Kudos to you

Default Abingdon for retirees?

As a retiree from the North, I'm curious about Abingdon as a town for older folks to move to from afar. I was there once and really liked my first impression.

How accepting is the town of outsiders? How senior-friendly?

What are some of the amenities--council on aging, senior center, senior classes, etc.

How easy or hard is it to get around town? Any senior transportation?

How safe is it to live in a neighborhood close to downtown?

Thanks for any info!

I have noticed Abingdon has always been a friendly town. I stopped through there not long ago and yes the locals are very nice. Abingdon has always been
known in this state as a haven for wealthy lawyers. I have noticed the East
Tennessee, SW Va area as much friendlier and open to outsiders than other parts of Va, not to mention the outstanding scenery. I would say retirement there would be a good move if you like a more peaceful, rural setting.
