Question Cell Phone Service in RURAL Virginia? Sprint, Verizon, Other?

We have lived here in central VA about a year now and have given up on AT&T (who has always been great otherwise) as a reliable carrier.

We drive the more rural roads of central and southern Virginia (via C-Ville)and have horrible luck with huge dead areas and complete cities with little to no service through AT&T.

Does anyone have an opinion either way on what carrier is generally the best throughout these areas?

Thanks!!!

I see no one else has responded, so I'll offer my 2 cents. We have a weekend place in western Amherst County and get no reception because of the mountains. From the few folks we have talked to, Verizon seems to be the preferred provider. However they still say there are dead zones here and there.

We have TracFones, and you cannot depend on them once you leave a main road like Rt 29.

Go with Verizon.
Our experience has been good. There are a few dead spots, but nothing like AT&T.

Yes Verizon has by far the best coverage of the bigger carriers in central and western VA

Verizon has the best overall coverage for the broad area of central Va. Ntelos has coverage in a few areas that Verizon is weak in but it is hit or miss. Finally some areas just do not have good coverage. I know this because the two places I am in the most have bad coverage at most times. White Hall area near White hall vineyards is one and the other is at the west part of Davis Creek Lane. I have landline service at both places due to the lack of coverage.

Verizon. I've driven 64 all the way out to 81 w/o a hitch. I've also driven the backroads between 64 and 360/460 with any issues. Even the GPS in my Droid worked.

I am in rural Buckingham County and travel to Amherst frequently as well as Charlottesville, Richmond, Lynchburg, etc and US Cellular has been the best we can find. I rarely hit a dead zone.

I'm in the western area of Floyd county and cell service is so bad here that I finally gave up on having one. I'd had a Tracfone with a plan that gave me the most time to use my minutes and still had used less than half of them when the year was up. Since I'm retired and often home for days at a time I was getting very little usage.
