I believe Wise County is more afordable than Farmville. Areas surrounding Farmville (cumberland and such) must be very rural - I had a hard time finding any rental properties. I'm hoping to hear from someone familiar with areas surrounding Farmville or Wise county. I did notice Wise has a larger population of families in poverty and income levels were very low. Pictures of the area were lovely though.
Basically I'm looking for an area near a VA college (not in the Virginia Beach area) that has very afordable housing without giving up good schools and a family feel.
Thanks!

Not sure what is good or not good in a school but if poverty, drugs and corrupt politics is your forte, then I would say that Wise county is about as good as any other.
Maybe bringing in some education would be a bonus to the area. Far as I can tell its all welfare row there and Walmart heaven. You have it booming actually due to road access it has continued to grow in size and cheap stores like Walmart but not in anything else much good.
Its a backwards place where the women are around 300 lbs on average and where stupidity reigns. All the men are on disabilty due to back injury and dope is the deal of the day. Now if you can ignore all the bad things I am sure there is plenty of good. Seems the College does work out pretty well as the folks that come there may just be smarter or immune to the back woods ignorance the rest of us suffer from.
