The Northern Neck ,eastern area of Virginia is a dream come true. Towns like Kilmarnock, Irvington, and Reedville are historical and offer fine resturants and shops. The five star Tides Inn is located on Carters Creek, Irvington (where several presidents have indulged in golf, it is also the home of Roger Mudd.)
If you like boating, fishing and wildlife this is your place, several rivers, waterfront homes and of course the Bay. You are about 2 1/2 hours from Washington D.C., one hour from Richmond and one hour from Williamsburg, and 45 minutes from Newport News.
Taxes are VERY low, people are honest and friendly, very low crime, barely any to speak of. Excellent doctors and medical facilites.
This is the area on the brink of development, mainly because of all the surrounding bodies of water.and a short distance to major cities.Presently inland properties are very reasonable ,however waterfront properties are going up fast.
We moved here ten years ago from Washington D.C. area where our children still live, great not in there back yard but close enough. When they have had enough of Northern Virginia traffic and hectic life style they retreat to our area and enjoy the beach, fishing off our pier and boating. Hope this helps if anyone is considering Virginia as your home state.

patch,

Just starting to do research on "next location" - kids at college - I'm gonna pull the plug early and depart Northern Virginia as early as possible - traffic, beltway, etc!

Still wanna be able to get into WDC area when needed, though.

We have been doing the driving around thing, but hard to fully evaluate based on drive through ...

If you had to do it all over, again, and wanted to be on one of the rivers within about 5 minutes by boat to the mouth of the river into the Chesapeake, where would you consider?

I don't really golf much, but do like general boating, fishing, exploring by boat ... wife is concerned about perceived lack of shopping, grocery stores, etc in a lot of the Northern Neck area ...

Would appreciate any advice you could offer!

Thanks!

There are several rivers/ creeks, the Great Wicomico River is beautiful, however you have the Potomac river and the Rappahannock River. Reedville is a lovely area as well as Kilmarnock. As for shopping you are within and hour from Williamsburg, Fredericksburg and two and a half hours from W.D.C. For the most part you will not lack for fine eateries/deli's in the Northern Neck. With a good realtor there are still afforable waterfront properties, as well as water access. Other small towns to consider are Callao, Heathsville, White stone, Lively.you don't have to travel far in any direction to be on the water.
