Default How much does a beach house cost in Southern Virginia?

In a few years I might want to purchase a beach house in Southern Virginia. How much would a small 1-2 bedroom house cost, and are the beaches there in the summer as nice as Florida or Carolina beaches?

Your question is way too vague. The "beaches" in Virginia range from huge oceanfront homes in Virginia Beach to little cottages up and down the rivers and along the Chesapeake Bay.

Perhaps if you gave a price range, and style of house (condo, townhouse, detached), people could give you an idea of what and where you can buy.

Good luck.

I do not want to hijack this thread, but would like to ask where the nearest ocean beach is to Bluefield, Va. We've looked on Google but thought we'd ask those who know VA well.

Thank you.

mikejody, if you are talking about ocean beaches, then Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks of NC are the closest. If you are open to a lake, then Smith Mountain Lake which is in the triangle of Roanoke, Lynchburg and Danville. It's a huge lake with beaches and lots of boating. If you use mapquest, you can estimate the mileage. Good luck.

I want a nice quiet beautiful beach. I am not familiar with the beaches to actually be interested in a specific one.

If you want a nice quiet ocean beach, then you would be interested in Sandbridge VA. It's where people go when they want a quiet family-oriented beach instead of the hustle and crowds in Virginia Beach. Any further south and you will be in North Carolina. Use Zillow - Real Estate, Homes for Sale, Home Prices & Values to get an idea of the available properties and prices. If that research gives you too much sticker shock, consider some of the Chesapeake bay beach communities such as Port Haywood.

Definately shoot for the coast of southern NC or northern SC around Myrtle Beach. There are palm trees, nice & clean beaches and real estate is quite cheap in that area right now. The drive from Bluefield would be approx. 5-6 hours.

From Roanoke I drive to Myrtle Beach in around 5.4 hrs. I know a lot of shortcuts and all of the new highways in the Carolinas and bypasses really speed up the trip, plus the speed limits are higher in NC! Just getting out of VA really slows me down, especially the highway 220 which was supposed to be interstate 73 which was never built in VA sadly!

Thank you for your response. Yes, we had looked into Smith Mountain Lake, but it seemed like all the properties available were on or near the Lake. We're looking for mountain properties with views, but would love to be by the lake also. Do you happen to know if this is possible near Smith Mountain Lake?
