I heard recently that people are moving from DC out to places like Harrisonburg.
Is this true and why there? |

Job-wise would be my only question here... Harrisonburg is a beautiful small city and DC is a pool of stress IMO.

Harrisonburg has a lot to offer for a town of its size. It has a very good school- James Madison University, a thriving local music scene, and just a lot of sheer beauty of being in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. A day trip to D.C. is still doeable , and you are about 2 hours from Richmond.

Maybe I missed something?
My experience with Harrisonburg is that I took 33 into Hburg from Skyline and found myself in the most commercial area I could imagine. Traffic was terrible with ENDLESS strip malls, restaurants, dept. stores,...etc..etc. And on the outskirts, tons of cookie cutter neighborhoods. From what I saw, it was absolutely the most commercial, soul-less place I saw on my trip. Please tell me that I was only in one part of Hburg? And that somewhere there is a cute little quaint historic area? Because from what I saw? Nothing but commercial sprawl and traffic. |

The historic area is around the court house and while not the most spectacular example of a town square, it is certainly not a strip mall area. Head west and you quickly come to rural dwellings and then sheer wilderness.

Thx Moth,
I appreciate it. I was only as far west as I81. Never went farther,...and the area from I81 east down 33 was insane. I look forward to checking out the 'calmer' less commercially polluted areas.... |

The Blue Ridge Pkwy is quite touristy in general I believe.

Hmmm....I am sure there are 'areas' along the Parkway that get touristy,...and Skyline drive in particular,....but there are plenty of areas that are not. Not to mention, I would not consider Harrisonburg to be on the BRP. It is farther west.
Elkton for example is right off skyline drive,...and is a 1 stoplight town. I will also mention, and could easily be wrong,...that 'touristy' does not have to mean miles of crappy stripmalls with Ooutback Steakhouses and AppleBees everywhere. Tourism can also foster the historic side of alot of these towns, helping to keep the quaintness and charm. Just my thoughts... |
