I would agree Norton is a very good place to live, and it is the smallest city in Virginia. I hope to be able to find work back near there one day. As a nurse, I'm guessing you're either thinking of working at Norton Community or St. Mary's, but both are hospitals in the city. Nurses are in demand there with Lonesome Pine Hospital not far away. The closest big city is either Bristol or Kingsport, both about an hour away. The people are very friendly. Cost of living can fluctuate. There are very rural areas and towns near the city that you can get real estate for a very low price. However, there's also land and real estate within Norton, Big Stone, or Wise that's just as expensive as if you were trying to find something in a much larger city like Bristol or Kingsport. The weather is seasonal and the worst thing about summer is the humidity in the mountains. For entertainment, they're building a nice, large theater downtown while they close down the theatres in Wise and Coeburn. Barter Theatre in Abingdon is also very well known for its live plays. The VA/KY District Fair is also well-known for bringing in fairly well-known Country singers one week a year while Freedom Hall in Johnson City has all kinds of shows throughout the year. The big shopping center is the Norton Commons with the Super Wal-Mart between Wise and Norton and a lot of restaurants. The main reason why it's so busy there is because of all the people that come from Eastern Kentucky and other rural parts SW Virginia from places like Russell or Dickenson Counties. I guess the original post was about 3-4 months ago so you may not even be checking this anymore, but I hope it was of some help.
