My friend Jonathon and I are looking to move away from Louisiana. I'm originally from the Appalachians on the Allegheny side and want to go back to the mountains. Jonathon has expressed interest in a few areas including this portion of Virginia, which we both love and know people from. It's quite possible, depending on finding work, that we will choose this area.

We would like to live in a generally rural area much like where we are now, but within roughly a half hours drive to Harrisonburg. After looking on Google maps and having been there I see this is a possibility!

My questions to ya'll are where can we look for homes online, look for jobs online, is there much available in the area right now, Etc. As far as a home we don't need much. Just something that won't fall in on us. Trailers are fine, we live in one here.

As far as work Jonathon is currently a draftsman for a company in Baton Rouge called PCS (Power control systems). They design switchyards and all kinds of electrical systems for plants and so forth. Is there anything of that sort in Harrisonburg or even Waynesboro?

Thank you.

Jobs are not plentiful in many parts of Virginia. Job fairs in Richmond attract many more people looking for jobs than there are jobs.

My advice would be for one of you to find a job first and let that dictate where you live. Unless you are independently wealthy, moving here with no job may leave you wanting to go back to Louisiana and your old jobs.

Have you checked Craigslist postings for Harrisonburg?

Go to Job Search | one search. all jobs. Indeed.com

Punch in the key words for jobs and the location you want.

If you go to advanced options, you can narrow down your search and have new postings emailed to you.

Good luck!

Oh! Thank you. That will help. (I don't trust Craigslist).

We live in Michigan and planning on moving to the Waynesboro or Harrisonburg area in the next few years. If you are looking for a place to buy or rent in Harrisonburg I suggest subscribing to the E-edition of their newspaper DNR (daily news record) online. It is an online version of their exact newspaper including classifieds that include jobs and places to rent/buy. Its about $5 per month but worth it. Hope that helps!
