Actually, I detest these rankings. Lynchburg or Charlottesville or anytown USA, is not the "best" place for everyone. These rankings come out and people flock to these communities. Then, a lot find out the "culture" of the city isn't for them after all. There is frequently tension between old and new about changes and growth. The influx of people causes taxes to rise on long-term residents etc. I think it would be much wiser for people to research places on their own (City-Data is perfect for this) to determine the personality, the climate, the tax base, cost of living etc.

Yes Springrrl, but you beat me to the punch here. Also I think any tension that moves people to grow and reassess their thinking is not a bad thing. You can be too insular and stuck in the past. Generally reired folks are very positve for a city. They bring in new money, do not demand many services, are not criminals, and they have time to volunteer and make the city better at little or no cost. Any place that is not growing changing is dying.
