Default Programs for Adolescent Mental and Behavioral Health Services

Hello Virginia forumites ~

I am reposting this from the Charlottesville forum to see if I can get some responses.

My husband and I are thinking of moving to Charlottesville in a few months (currently reside in Nevada). He works in the field of mental and behavioral services, typically for adolescents and at-risk youth. Do any of you personally know of programs like this in the Charlottesville area? I googled the heck out of it the other day, and I got a lot of results in Arlington, Fairfax, and Richmond, but I am more interested in Charlottesville. Basically, I don't want to live in a really urban area. We would rather live near mountains and natural scenery. I did find a website for a company called "Compass," which offers mental and behavioral health services, so that's something.

I will continue researching; I just wanted to get the human perspective on it. Thanks for any help you can provide!

- Sheffy

Near Charlottesville and around the state there are free-standing facilities and state run facilities. Every area has a government run mental health service through whats called a community service baord, in Augusta County, near Charlottesville, it's called Valley Community Services Board. They have day programs for adults and children and emergengy consults.

In Staunton there is Commonwealth Center for Children & Adolesents, a state run facility on the grounds of Western State Hospital which is an adult long-term commitment facility.

There are many others around the state;

Free standing:
Dominion in Arlington, VA
Snowden in Fredricksburg, VA
Poplar Springs in Petersburg, VA

Hospital Based:
Virginia Baptist in Lynchburg, VA
Virginia Treatment Center @ MCV in Richmond, VA
Inova Fairfax in Fairfax, VA
Sentara in Norfolk, VA

Some of these listed care for childern and adults in seperate sections, there are many more I can't remember right now. Marion, VA has a facility connected to the county jail. The school systems used to have a program for at-risk youth also, check the local school pages.

Your welcome, the school based program was called PULSAR (finally remembered this a.m.). I don't know if the program is still running, I haven't heard much about it recently.
