Lots of mountain privacy!
Hi everyone,
I appreciate the help that so many of you give with your knowledge of Southwest VA. I need that help, please!
My husband and I will be retiring next spring, and want to relocate to SW VA to mt. views, total seclusion w/ the proverbial sm. lake for fishing. (300+ acres). We have horses and need trails for riding where others accept horses. We don't mind driving 60 miles to shop... VA people have been terrific to us and the beauty of the state is just breathtaking! Can anyone give us ideas of where we can find wooded seclusion? Thank you...

Hmmmm.....I cannot offer exact advice on that one. We found our mtn seclusion on the Bluleridge mountains, outside Elkton. But, we were never looking for that large an acreage.
On our many trips looking throughout VA, some really beautiful, mountainous areas were Damascus, Wythe cty and Bland cty.
Best of luck!

HMMMM... 300 acres??? I'll give you a few ideas of counties you could look in. Carroll County, Grayson County (perhaps best bet in area), Wythe County, Bland County, Tazewell County, Craig, Floyd, and perhaps Pulaski. Those are all within a reasonable distance of Winston, Charlotte, and Roanoke. You will find Claytor Lake, the New River, a few other rivers of note. You will have no problem finding places to ride your horses.

Every time I think of Craig County, I remember the drive up highway 311 through Catawba and especially Homeplace.

I would suggest Wythe, Carroll, and Grayson. You will find many horse people and the land prices are not out of this world.

There are 300 acres in 10 lots going up for auction in Boones Mill, VA ( Woltz & Associates, Inc. - Real Estate Brokers & Auctioneers) but you'd likely be bidding against developers with some pretty deep pockets. Anyway, it has a spring fed pond and a very secluded house with some super mountain views (well once about 50 poplars are logged anyway).
Other locations to look into include land around Claytor Lake. Also, you might _seriously_ look into areas around Philpott Reservoir in Patrick County. There are _many_ horse trails around Fairystone Lake and Philpott and that area is popular trailer-in and trail ride destination.
By far the BEST real estate site for rural properties is Country Homes, Ranches & Farm Land for Sale - United Country Rural Real Estate. It's where we found our place. You can search by state or look at a graphical map of Virginia and select office pinpoints and select Show All Real Estate to get the nitty gritty.
I also like Craig County, albeit the more populated side south of the Alleghenies. Nice rolling hills and close to Roanoke. The other side, near Paint Bank and such, would be quite less than 60 miles away from Roanoke and Blacksburg but be far enough removed to be quite cheap to buy into.

Try the area of Clifton Forge/Covington. Land is cheap...but close to Lake Moomaw (yes that is it's name). Close to Hot Springs, skiing, beautiful mts., yet not out of the way to shop in Roanoke (and about 3 hrs from Richmond/4 to the Beach)

Clifton Forge Region
I agree with Pogo 1288. Lake Moomaw is an awesome lake. Skiing at Snowshoe, Resorts at Homestead and The Greenbrier. There is an Amtrak train which stops at Clifton Forge which goes to DC. Roanoke is closeby for urban amenities. Lots of wide open spaces and very friendly people. What are you waiting for? Get there before everyone else does!!

Thank you--each of you--for the help! We drove into the mts. last weekend and again were struck with awe at their beauty!! Can't wait till we can move there. Checking out the different areas that were mentioned, we understand why you all mentioned the places you have. We've (to date) checked out 14 different places and are trying to decide on just one of them and are finding it to be a really tough decision!!
