Default May be moving to South Hill area-advice??

My husband has been offered a job in Chase City. We currently live in Nebraska. We aren't sure what area we should look at to live. He drives 40 minutes to his current job, so a commute is not a problem. We have two boys ages 10 and 12. Are the schools in the area good? Any sports programs? My kids are into football, basketball, soccer and wrestling. We also insist on living in the country with room for my kids to ride their 4-wheelers. We would rather rent than buy, because we aren't sure how long the position will last and we won't be selling our current farm. Any advice??

I grew up in an adjoining town/county (Blackstone/Nottoway). I would suggest contacting the local newspaper and getting a subscription. Most people in southside VA advertise their rentals that way versus going with a property manager. Also, as to where the kids will go to school, there is only (to my knowledge) one high school. For medical, I know the hospital has really expanded in the last 10 years; you should be fine in that arena. Good luck!

Default I Feel Sorry For You.

I am from South Hill. I grew up there. I know live in Chesterfield, Va. That area is dead. the schools don't have alot to offer. The community either. Its a great rural setting and everyone has a 4-wheeler. But land is not really enough. The whole area is drug infested. People who you wouldn't think would be on drugs are. Crime is high for a small area. I'd suggest moving to a better area nearby. Dinwiddie....or Emporia . Stay away from the Boydton Chase City Area!!! If he didn't mind the 40-60 minute commute Chesterfield would be ideal. There are alot of good Schools and community events. You can still find a rural setting in a more suburban setting.

Default Think Oxford NC

Oxford is a small progressive town located just south on I-85 from South Hill, VA. Commute is 25-30mins to South Hill. Oxford's schools are good and I like how close I am to the Raleigh/Durham areas. Some of the things my kids like about Oxford is the local soccer team with its challenge leagues, the community theater in town, the parades and festivals just to name a few. Oxford has a pretty historic district with downtown shopping, bookstore and coffee house.

I moved from New York to Chase City 5 yrs. ago. I had bought enough land for myself and I have 11 horses and some other pets. They are looking to build an Ethanol Plant in the heart of Chase City so I would rent something at least 7 to 8 miles away from the town of Chase City just in case this plant goes up. There is a drug problem which is everywhere. If you like country living then Mecklenburg County is the place for you. I travel to either South Hill to shop or I drive up to Richmond VA to shop. I would first contact the Mayor and the Town Supervisors and ask them if this Ethanol Plant is going to be built or not. I love the farm life even though I moved from Manhanttan,NY its beautiful country as long as they keep it that way and don't turn it into an industrial park. Good Luck!

Default South Hill

Whatever you do, don't move there. I grew up there. There is nothing for children or families to do. The schools are not up to par. It's dead and not improving.

Default Don't go to South Hill or Mecklenburg County

I moved to South Hill VA for 1 year. It was the worst experience of my life. The crime is worst there than any of the surrounding areas. There is lots of mental illness there (in the middle of the town, there is an institution where people are committed for being a danger to themselves or someone else). Lots of arrogance and ignorance. Stay away! The legal system operates more like organized crime. I hear Chase City is drug infested. Lots of backwards thinking.

A much better place is South Boston, Virginia. Schools are better, more established arts community. Progressive thinking for a small southern town.

People are tripping. My aunt and uncle live there and I go there often. For those of you who are saying there is a drug problem, you don't know what a drug problem is. My aunt and uncle live on a couple of acres and it is very quiet and peaceful.

HOWEVER --- those who are saying there is nothing to do there are absolutely right. I can't stand it for over a day or two.
