Looking to move to the area and wanted opinions on these towns in the Valley. Prefer walkable communities but with something to walk "to" such as decent restaurants (not drive-through). Never visted the area and my only reference is google maps. From this, Staunton and Winchester appear to have more intact historical downtown areas.

Although I really like Harrisonburg (son went to JMU) I would take one of the other two for what you are looking for. Harrisonburg does have a downtown but it's not as well developed as the other two. You could not go wrong with either Staunton or Winchester. Winchester puts you closer to transportation and the DC but is still far enough out to escape most of their traffic.

There are quite a few threads on here about each of those towns. If you use the "search" feature, you ca get a lot of information.

Then, it will be easier to ask specific questions about each community. You haven't mentioned employment so I'll assume this is retirement. It will help if you explain style of house, price range, type of hobbies/activities you'll be seeking etc. because each community has benefits/drawbacks.

Best of luck!

As already mentioned, Winchester puts you closer to DC with all it has to offer. I'm from Staunton and would say that it's downtown offers everything you're looking for. But there isn't much else outside of downtown other than Wal Mart and Lowes. However, Staunton is closer to Charlottesville and for its size, is extremely walkable and offers decent shopping. The town next to Staunton, Waynesboro, has been getting more big box style shopping in recent years if that's important to you.

Thanks for the replies. We like the fact that Staunton has a Amtrak station for alternative transportation options. Big box access is not critical, although access to good schools will be concern. Most important feature is a pedestrian friendly downtown with essential basic amenities (residential housing, post office, library, hardware store, etc.) not just restaurants. It appears that both Staunton and Winchester are much more progressive than Harrisonburg in the re-development of the downtown to cater to pedestrians' needs.
