No I'd get a heavy duty hose clamp, then some heavy plastic. Cut it, then try to wrap it around the opening, then seal with good tape (Gorilla Tape is great) and/or the hose clamp. But this is a temporary fix, obviously, as it will be a pain in the ass to open and re-seal.
Put a bunch of bricks on top of the garbage can or cinder block maybe? Thanks for explaining what a riser is.

Dude forget the garbage can. Mice can get through the smallest opening and because nobody's lawn is totally level an upside down can will have tiny openings along the bottom. Besides it would catch a lot of wind and even with bricks it will be so top heavy and broad I just don't see it.

I'd go to Home Depot, get that plastic people put over their leaky windows in winter, seal it with good tape (Not duct tape, Gorrila Tape is way stronger) and wait until the well guy can hook you up with a legit top.

Mine has that slab all the way around it making it perfectly level. There is a well shop around here. I think even if I get a cover I might have some problems. Seems to me that the guys who did my intake well pump years ago notched the concrete riser to allow the bar that holds the pump to fit. This area is small enough to allow mice in.

I might have to mix up some concrete to fix those areas.

It is so simple but so complex!

Thanks for all your help.

I'm interested in what the outcome has been since January. I recently moved to Spotsy and am having well/septic questions, but the Health Department at the Courthouse has been really helpful. I also have a phone number for a company that makes new well caps (which I need to take care of VERY soon). Let me know if you would like the number, but also if you have resolved any of the issues you were experiencing in January. Thanks!
