What area in VA is the most suitable for having horses? How long is the pasture season? What is the cost of a bale of hay currently?

I don't have horses but Loudoun and Fauquier counties are well known for its horse community.

Most of Virginia is known for horses. If you are looking to move, be more specific about how many acres/horses etc and, especially, your budget.

You might want to contact the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington for information. Also, get a copy of a magazine called Chronicle of the Horse is produced in Middleburg. You can get info about it online.

Best of Luck.

Culpeper County is also a good place for horses, and land is less expensive (whether buying or renting) than Fauquier or Loudoun.

Much of the information you need is available online from "Horse Talk Magazine", a Virginia-based online publication since 1992. Here's the link:

For hay prices check out craigslist farm and garden for several different locations around VA. In this area first cut square bales are going for 3 to 4 a bale.

You may want to check out the classified and the green pages on:

Virginia Equestrian.com

If your intent is to open a stable as a business, some parts of the Commonwealth would be better than others. Your type of riding might affect where you would want to locate a for-profit stable.

Good luck to the OP.
