My husband has been relocated to Harrisonburg for his job and we will be moving to the area in July. We are in our early 30s with 2 sons under 4. We currently live in Roanoke and LOVE it here. I'm very sad to leave but duty calls!

Where is the best place for a young family? Schools, community, parks & rec, etc? I have been looking at Harrisonburg, Bridgewater, Staunton, Fishersville, Waynesboro.. I don't want too rural as I'm from SWVA and been there, done that.

If you want to avoid anything rural, I would strongly suggest looking into Harrisonburg or Bridgewater (which is like a stone's throw away from Harrisonburg). Harrisonburg is very diverse (compared to the other areas you've mentioned) and has great restaurants that offer more than BBQ. And Harrisonburg residents seem to be involved in improving their community as well, with a growing support for more greenways and biking/walking paths. I can't really comment on the school system, though. Good luck in your search!

I agree with Ikol. I would pick Bridgewater over Harrisonburg, but that's personal preference.

In Harrisonburg, are most student housing options located just around JMU? I don't want to get stuck with a bunch of college kids as neighbors

vtmeg04: Yes, you do have to be mindful of all the student housing in the area. A Realtor should be able to help you avoid the student ghettos around JMU. I would also advise you to stay away from the neighborhoods around Port Republic Rd. I hope your relocation is going well.
