Everyone raved Glen Allen was the place to be, and we were very disappointed with that area. It was very congested and near main highways and just not what we are used to. We want something close to Ashland where my dh would be working, but with the country style of life that we are accustomed to living.I just don't want neighbors up my butt, and a great school district is a must. Please help! TIA

Live in Hanover... you'd be closer to Ashland (since Ashland is in Hanover) and the county is still more rural in many areas. I'd recommend some areas in the county but I'm not that familiar with it. Also, schools are very good.

If you want to be close to Ashland, but rural, then move close to Ashland. Once you go about 5 minutes outside of Ashland in any direction other than straight south into Henrico, you're in very nice, very rural countryside. I used to live right near the intersection of I-295 and I-95, about 6 miles straight south of Ashland. Look in westerns or northwestern Hanover County. I recommend the Beaverdam area. There is some really nice real estate to be had there, much less expensively than closer in to the city, yet it is only a few minutes from Ashland. Alternatively, go a few more minutes up the road to Caroline County. Or even farther west into Lousia, but then you're getting even farther from Ashland and there are some pockets that are bit dodgy (i.e., you occasionally fear that you have suddenly slipped into a scene from the movie "Deliverance").

The areas around Lake Anna are also quite nice and rural.

Sorry I'm late to this party, but I'm about halfway between Ashland and Montpelier. Schools are old but real good. Land is available and not heartbreakingly priced. It's quiet, rural, and 30 minutes from everywhere.
$600K and you can buy my place.
