My family is planning on uprooting ourselves from Florida to Virginia in order to live closer to the rest of our family. This includes my 62 year old mother, 3-20 somethings, all of which are in college or plan to attend, my 4 year old daughter, and our wonderful 3 pets (1 dog, 2 cats).

With that being said, we want to find a place that hopefully meets the needs of each age group.

Gay-friendly

Open minded community

Good schools

Active gay community would be a plus not necessary though.

Our Black Lab has an abundance of energy so dog parks are another plus.

Financially, we are considered probably upper lower class to lower middle class for now.

Any advice or links to other forums on specific areas that would fit our needs would be very much appreciated.

Virginia covers quite a bit of territory so maybe you can let us know where the family lives that you want to be closer to - that could affect the answer! Good luck!

Basically anywhere in Northern Virginia.

While Northern Virginia offers just about everything, it also has a very high cost of living. OP describes family as "upper lower to lower middle" class so NoVa might be a difficult financial situation, especially with 3 trying to pay for college and it would be expensive to find housing for seven people and 3 pets.

OP: What kind of employment will all you be seeking? Different parts of the states have different work opportunities. Again, NoVa would be difficult for those with less than college degrees.

Thank you for all of your responses, sorry for the delay.

@ Watchful-- Our families live in multiple states so we will be closer no matter what city we move to.

@LynchburgLover-- We don't all plan to live together, we all plan to move up together as one big trip. My girlfriend, my daughter, myself, the dog and two cats are one household and my mother, my sister, and their pets is the other household.

We all work at Walmart, but my girlfriend and I are planning on trying to find a job related to our degree plans

The degree she is working towards is Associates of Applied Science in Human Services.

I am working on my Associates of Applied Science in Business Administration though my career plan is to work with the environment, just not exactly sure what aspect yet. I was thinking about working in a national park or something involved with the city if I can find any openings.

My sister and mother will be transferring from store to store. Thank you again.

Ahh, I thought you meant all together! LOL. Okay, that makes it much easier. Then I would say GustavoFring is right. Northern Virginia is very expensive.

Pick a city and start asking specific questions and people will be able to give more advice. Virginia is a fairly large state.

Best of luck.

Of the places I've lived in VA, I like the Harrisonburg area best. This group may be able to give you information on this area re the gay community: SVGLA - Shenandoah Valley Gay and Lesbian Association

I don't think there is a dog park in the city, however.

Personally, I'd recommend the tidewater area, Norfolk specifically.

Charlottesville or Roanoke would work for you.

And, if there is no dog park close by, what better way to meet people and get involved -- start your own!
