I am taking a trip from Knoxville TN to Newsport News VA and really worried about the drive. I don't do well with high elevations, mountain/curvy roads and bridges. Is anyone familiar with this route and can give me some advice or feedback on what to expect I would appreciate it.

In the last 2 years I did both Louisville to Charlotte via Knoxville and I-40 and Louisville to Arlington VA Via I-64 and I-81. I think if you can handle I-40 from Knoxville until cutting over to I-81, you'll be fine. I-81 is a pretty open highway when compared to I-40 heading through the TN/NC state line which is your worst fears. I-64 will be a breeze all the way to Newport News (not considering traffic) since it is not in the mountains for the most part.

I recommend you take I-40 East all the way to Raleigh, N.C. then I-85 North to Petersburg, VA area, then I-95 North to I-64 East. Might be a bit longer than I-81 but you only have the one section of mountains from TN into NC. I-81 is not that bad, but if you hate mountains from Christiansburg, VA to the turn East at Staunton, VA is multiple mountains including one more before Charlottesville, VA on I-64 which gets foggy in rainy/bad weather.

For what it's worth, I-81 statistically has TWICE the ratio of tractor-trailers in its traffic mix, as the average interstate highway does. There was article about this in the Washington Post newspaper.

I-40 in that area isn't that bad,yes its curves but nothing to be worried about..Now if you was going west my advice would be VERY different. I-40 from AZ to texas is an "experience" during the winter months. you can make that drive in less then 8 hours..I-40 to I-81 to I-64
