What's up in Williamsburg?
I'm planning another trip to Williamsburg soon and was wondering what kind of things would be good for kids (boys, ages 12 and 15) this time of year. We're planning on hitting Busch Garden's Howl-O-Scream one day, but I need some other activities to keep the kids occupied.

a few miles west on rt 60 in lightfoot va there is a go cart park with several tracks and carnival games, outlet shops not for kids i guess, and then there is the world famous pottery. this place covers acres of just about anything that has ever been for sale on earth. close to being a flea market but its all new stuff.
there used to be a model train display in one of the shopping centers just before you get to busch gardens.

Are there any local, seasonal activities of note?

seasonal, summer is water country, or if you want a slide park in mid winter there is great wolf lodge, jamestown is a good place to take kids to see where the first settlement in n.america was, it has replica's of the original boats that crossed the atlantic and a village with re-enactments gong on.

That's one thing I didn't like about growing up in Williamsburg is the lack of different things for kids to do. Yes there's Busch Gardens/Water country, Go Karts Plus, there's educational stuff like Jamestown/Yorktown/Colonial Williamsburg, but not a whole lot more. Like a previous poster mentioned, there is Great Wolf Lodge, which has a small water park (compared to Water Country), but is pretty neat. I've only been there b/c my brother is a lifeguard there. Not sure if you have to actually have a room there to go though. It looked to me like it was geared towards families who visit with there younger children, as adults hang out there while the younger kids play.
Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot else to do except maybe go to various shopping spots (like the pottery, prime outlets, monticello marketplace, new town), etc. I don't know if this is still true... but last time I was at New Town Barnes and Noble was not open yet. The whole parking lot was full for some live music (no clue what type of music or bands) and it was during a week night. You could probably call Barnes and Noble or someone at New Town and ask if you think they'd be interested in that.

Check the VA Gazette for local activities. Tons of things for kids... www.vagazette.com. Click on "events".
By the way, it is a wonderful place to live. It's an upscale community without being too awfully "up price". Almost all of the people who live here have all come from somewhere else. It's really fun to have such variety.
I've been here for 3 1/2 years. Moved from Philly. I love it!
