Apparently a tractor trailer caught fire in the north bound tunnel near the WV line and it will be closed for awhile. We got stuck in the traffic nightmare as all detours were jammed. After 3 1/2 hours stuck we finally were able to turn around and head back to Wytheville were we got a room for the night. I understand that 77 is closed at the I-81 interchange. Got to find another way around.

Sorry to hear about your traffic nightmare. We are having quite a few (too many events) on I81 in the Roanoke area also.
Entire segments of i81 can suddenly close due to accidents, many of which are caused by the higher speed limits and people who are not aware of the difficult mountain terrain. For travelers who are planning to use i81especially in the Roanoke area,
Please slow down and obey the speed limit! Good Luck out there!
