Default Wyndham Hotel on Hershberger Rd?

Merry Christmas!

I have been looking up hotels in the Roanoke area for a place for a wedding reception. Several places have listed the Wyndham Airport at 2801 Hershberger Road and one site I even found pictures that said it was at this hotel, however when I look for it on the Wyndham website it says they don't have a hotel in Roanoke.

Does anybody know about this hotel, maybe it has changed to a different name???

Thanks for your help.

While I'm at it, if anybody has any ideas for wedding reception venues in the Roanoke area (besides Hotel Roanoke) I am VERY INTERESTED!

Thanks all and Happy Holidays!

Default Wyndham Hotel

Apparently the Wyndham will be undergoing renovations during the next few months as it converts to a four star Sheraton Hotel. At the moment it is called the Roanoke Plaza Hotel, phone 540-563-9300.
You may also check out the Jefferson Center, 540-343-2624. It is a located downtown and lots of people have wedding receptions there when The Hotel Roanoke is not available.
Nearby Bernards Landing at Smith Mountain Lake is popular with wedding receptions as well as Mountain Lake Hotel in Pembroke.
Also, the Natural Bridge Hotel is not far away and is very popular but I think that hotel is being sold also.
I know that its important to reserve early! Good Luck!!

Natural Bridge has been up for sale for a good while. You might also consider House Mountain Inn http://www.housemountaininn.com/weddings.htm which is breathtaking.

How many guests, approximately?

Boxtree Lodge in Vinton is nice, as is the Roanoke Country Club.

The Wyndham is still there, never been there, so I can't provide any insight.

I had not heard about the Wyndham changing names, but at least when it was the Wyndham a couple of months ago, it was a very very nice place. I loved the atmosphere there and the rooms were very spacious and a great deal for the price. I'm almost disappointed to hear that it's changing. It didn't feel like a hotel -- all of the plants and landscaping gave it a nice secluded resort feel.

It was one of two hotels that I had my wedding guests staying in, so I did a lot of research on it earlier this year.

Thanks so much for the replies!

I am in town for a few days and saw that the Wyndham looked pretty empty!

Also, went to Mariner's Landing for the first time and it looked like it would be a very nice place for a wedding/reception. Probably too $$$ for me though. And it's kind of a further drive than I was expecting.

I just put Boxtree Lodge on my list to drive by tomorrow. Also going to look at Loch Haven Lake if anybody knows anything about that?

Me and my fiance are still trying to decide in which order we want to do the following: get married, buy a house, quit our jobs and find new ones -- all very low stress activities! haha Right now we are on permanent travel as army contractors and want to get married and settle down in the Roanoke area. I'm a little worried about the job availability but my fiance's whole family lives here and we're trying to convince my parents to retire here from northern va.

Hope everyone has a happy New Years! Thanks again for the replies.

Driven from our home by the power outages here in Roanoke, I called all over town to find a hotel. Everywhere was booked except the Wyndham (now Roanoke Plaza Hotel). In a word, this place sucks, and I would not stay here more than one night.

The charges in this place are ridiculous. What most other hotels with lower rates offer for free, you pay for here. Need to make a local phone call? Three bucks a pop! Want internet? $10 a night extra! I'm surprised they don't charge per gallon of water you use in your shower! They don't offer a continental breakfast either, which most other hotels offer free of charge. Instead, because they have two restaurants on the first floor, they try to sell you a delivered breakfast for $10 of eggs and juice.

The rates for the rooms are higher than most places around town ($129 a night), and are not any better than anywhere else. In fact, the heat barely worked, and rather than a window heater, it was a wall-mounted system, which only heated the air along the ceiling on one side of the room. The opposite side of the room is a wall of glass which opens onto a 4-inch wide "balcony".

And parking here is another joke. The parking lot is arranged in an odd split fashion, so none of it is actually near the hotel. You can't park around back if your room is in the back, so you have to lug your luggage across the lot, down a long hall to the elevators, and down another long hall to your room, then back when you go out. If you leave after 5pm, you won't find a spot to park in when you get back.

Overall, a very poor value for the money. Comfort Inn has rooms just as nice for alot less, and they give you WIRELESS internet, local phone calls, and continental breakfast for free.

I thought this was a high-end hotel when I arrived. The only thing high-end here are prices.

Default Moving to Roanoke

Hi there,

Of all the things on your list, if you want to move to Roanoke, you should find a job first.

Most of the good jobs here are found through the Old Boy Network and you might find yourselves in a pickle if you move here and then start looking! Besides, you can't afford the wedding if you don't have a job!

There are many lovely places to get married, so don't worry about that right now. Just focus on getting the right jobs, then look for a place to live, then put together the wedding.

Now you have my two-cent's worth.

I am hoping the job search won't be as bad as everyone says it is in Roanoke. I have a master's degree in counseling, and he is a master electrician with several years of experience managing a multi-million dollar government contract project. Luckily we will have time and a savings reserve so we shouldn't be rushed to find a job. We will just be keeping our eyes on jobs for about the next year and if we see a job we are interested in we'll apply. But we don't need a job in the area until next year.

We set a wedding date in April 2009, so we don't have to rush to plan anything (although I did already buy my dress!) Also, we close on a house this Friday. It's in Hardy. We are very excited! With the dropping interest rates and the house price dropped quite a bit while it was on the market, we jumped on it.

Thanks for all the advice from everyone!
