Default Taxes laws in VA and NC

We have two homes one in North Carolina and one in Virginia. We live primarly in the one in VA. Husband is retired and drawing 2 retirements from the State of NC. He is about to began a part time job and will need to decide should he have taxes taken out as a NC resident or VA. The job is in VA. When we sale the home in NC will we then began to pay VA taxes on the retirement? Should we already be paying VA taxes as well as NC?

In short, Do we have the option to file in either state beings we have a home in each state?

You have to establish residency. I am not a lawyer and I don't know the legal requirements for residency but I think they include having your driver's license (if you have one) in that state...

VA income taxes are lower, so if you can file as a VA resident it is to your benefit.

My niece and myself inherited some land from my parents, I live on the land, do I have to pay my nieces part of the county taxes? I have been paying them for nine years, but she refuses to pay her half. What can I do? I have put thousands of dollars in the up keep of the house.
