We have been in the Northern Neck of Virginia for about 11 years, moved from D.C.
Just to up date anyone interested in moving into the area. There is a boom going on now in Kilmarnock. Several new restaurants have opened up in the past year. Wal Mart (which I am not crazy about) is here but somewhat hidden from the main traffic area. Several new businesses re-locating, a new B&B, hotel, sports bar, Peebles, Antique shops and so forth.Food shopping is mainly Food Lion, which recently up-dated all there stores in the area. For gourmet deli's we have several new shops which opened in the past two years. Tri Star (local for many years) is small but offers much.
We account for much of the growth due to location, 2 hours from D.C. One hour and a half from Williamsburg and an hour from Newport News. Most of all waterfront living, and still afforable housing.
The job market is mainly service jobs, health care, building/ retail, banking.
Most of the growth is retiree's or people wanting to start a business or re-locating a business.
Waterfront properites are becoming very expensive, but inland properites are still reasonalbe. Crime is not an issue here, some petty crime yes but nothing major.
Check out the Kilmarnock Chamber of Commerce, or check out the Northern Neck area for a visit.
