Just moved here from Maryland and we need to register our vehicles in Virginia and get VA plates.

Are we going to have to pay sales tax again when registering the vehicles here? If so, how long can we keep our MD plates? If we own rental properties in MD, can we still keep them titled there using the rental property addresses?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here you go:

From Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
New Residents

Within 60 days of moving here, you must obtain a Virginia driver's license. However, if you hold a commercial driver's license (CDL), you must obtain a Virginia CDL within 30 days.

From Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

"If you are titling your vehicle in Virginia for the first time and you hold a valid assignable title or registration issued in your name by another state or a branch of the United States Armed Forces, you will not have to pay the Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax. However, if you purchased the vehicle within the preceding 12 months, you must provide proof that the sales and use tax was paid elsewhere in order to be exempt in Virginia."

The rental property thing could work, although I would reckon you may find it easier just to get the VA license. Of course, then you are liable for personal property taxes, etc.
