My husband and I are looking to buy a rental cabin in the Shenandoah Valley. We live in NoVA right now and like that the area is two hours away from our house. We are debating over three places we saw. They are all 2 bedroom, 1 bath cabins. But we don't know which area is most rentable.

A friend said that it's a good idea to buy near a resort. The one in Mount Jackson is 5.5 miles (20 min drive) from Bryce, which might be good since it is a year round resort. I don't know much of anything else about the area.

Luray seems to have many attractions, like river activities, the caverns and the town. But I don't think there's much going on in winter. Maybe I'm wrong? The price of cabins in Luray are higher.

New Market is in the George Washington Forest and the cabin is basically turnkey and very private, but what is around New Market (besides it being a half an hour drive to Luray)?

Any thoughts/input appreciated!

Thanks.

Perhaps speaking with a local realtor can give you insight which market is the strongest for rentals.

The entire area is very nice and in some very scenic areas. I'm just a little north of Mount Jackson. I would think the one nearest Bryce would be the most active but I really don't know what's available in the area for rentals and so on. Luray is a popular area but actually more hotels than one would think.

VA Yankee....I have been talking to a local realtor, but i want other people's thoughts and opinions. He also has a vested interest as he owns a property management company in one of the areas. I want to make sure he's not skewing his input.

Thanks Bigfoot. Luray to me seems flooded with rental cabins and their prices are higher for purchase. Yet maybe there's a reason for it. But you are probably right about the hotels too.

We're going down again this weekend to look at cabins again. Hopefully we can make a decision on where!
