I am planning to retire soon and changing geographical location for me is key. Currently in NY but the busy NY is out of my retirement plans. I've lived and worked in ON,Canada before I lost my partner and moved up to NY.
Now, Semi- retirement is knocking with VA, DE and Washington on my mind...but I've read and heard about Blue Ridge Mountains to miles of beautiful beaches and coastline of VA being for lovers...I sure need the love...:-) though I am open to finding it anywhere but these 3 states appeal to me more. Its time to work less and share more time with someone special. I'll like to know more about lifestyle and retiring to VA, DE and Washington.

Williamsburg, VA is a popular place for retirees. It's absolutely gorgeous and you're not too far from Hampton Roads (1.7 million people) or Richmond (1.2 million people).

Karl - "Where to Retire" is a highly individual decision based on a number of factors such as taxes (especially any senior citizen tax breaks on Social Security benefits, age, military service, etc.), cost of living, nearness to family and friends, quality of life etc. Be sure to also check out the City-Data Retirement Forum where these sort of questions are asked and answered all the time.

Check Washington, VA and Rappahannock counties for real estate. It is more affordable than NOVA in general, and close to the mountains. Also try the areas around Harrisonberg, Lexington and so on. Anywhere near the Shenandoah mountains and a college town would be good.
