Our main sport is hunting. We have a great shooting also. The only way we make a pig squeal is shot it and then eat it.

New Castle
I live and have lived here in New Castle my whole life. Craig is a very rural and quiet area, yes we are very small, there is no stop lights, no fast food chains, and only one school system serving the entire county. We do face some economical issues due to our remote location. No real big business, or economical growth to speak of. Our public school system is our biggest employeer. However if you are looking for a quiet, great place to raise children, or a place to retire then we have the perfect location. We are not so far out that you can't go to a larger city (Roanoke or Blacksburg) for shopping or dining. It is about a 20 minute drive to these areas from "downtown" New Castle. The area is mostly National Forest so I don't anticipate any large growth that would endanger our serenity anytime soon.

I am now moving into Craig County just a couple of hundred feet outside the town border of New Castle. If you like a quiet, simple, and beautiful rural life this is the place for you with absolutely spectacular scenery everywhere. I come from the NJ/NY metropolitan area and am happy to finally "escape" the Northeast living style "nonsense"!
In New Castle/Craig County, you are 35 minutes "down the mountain" into the center of Roanoke with all that beautiful city has to offer. You also have the other very nice more upscale communities within reasonable and very beautiful drives.
The Winters are mild although this past Winter was a tad cold but really doesn't last very long. The people are warm, hospitable, and friendly so don't be put off by some of the remarks you see in these posts. You have to experience it to really appreciate the peace, charm, serenity, and beauty a rural setting has to offer with the amenities of Roanoke but a short drive away.
You do have quite a "mix" of architecture ranging from some pretty run down trailer accomodations on up the economic housing chain but don't let that put you off either as it rather lends to the charm of the area.
However, if you absolutely need the constant hum of city life and convenient amenities around you, then Roanoke is a great town and I would have no hesitation of residing within the Roanoke city limits even though I am not a "city boy". That is the only city I ever have visited in the United States in my lifetime that I would even think of living in.
See ya soon in Craig County!.........

My husbands family has a farm in the area. Its beautiful. The appalachian trail goes threw there. To really get what you need you will have to go into town. Blacksburg or Salem depending on were you are. Its people enjoying lives with land and there farms.
I there are some Christmas tree farms I remember and pumpkins. His aunt and uncle are retired and they are cyclist. I think I will post you a pick.
