Interesting in what type of way? Tis the question we must ask. I think it's interesting too, one of the most unique I've ever lived.

But in what way unique, or interesting, does TheJoe find it? I'll leave that for you to decide

I wonder if any of the people posting that Jerry Falwell Runs Lynchburg realize that he is dead? I lived there as a child and attended his private school "Lynchburg Christian Academy". Even when Jerry Falwell was alive, it seemed like about half the people in Lynchburg loved him and the other half hated him-so he NEVER ran that town.
As for 50% of Lynchburg being a slum- Lynchburg is a like a beautiful woman who has let herself get a little frumpy. She was a very wealthy city in the 19th century. Not quite so much anymore and some of those beautiful old houses from the 1800's have fallen into disrepair. Seems like lately there are more attempts at restoration, though.
Lynchburg definitely does not have the crime rate that Roanoke or Richmond has. I was just a kid when I lived there, so I did not see much of the "underbelly" but I really loved that city.

badger74 makes no sense. You just said you were moving to Lynchburg, VA so your husband can finish college. Yet, badger74 said the Falwell's run the city. While, they have some influence, Lynchburg is diverse and good for families. Also, when I attended Liberty, they had conservative influence, but I also heard Bernie Sanders and even Jessie Jackson speak at convocation. They have republicans, independents, and democrats at Liberty as well. Don't listen to the some of these opinions. Why would your husband commute from Roanoke to Lynchburg to finish degree. You would spend thousands more a year on gas alone!

What?? You are confused. We moved here to retire. The Falwells do not run the city but do run a highly successful college and church. Liberty has also invested large sums in the city. Also to those that were bad-mouthing Lynchburg back around 2010--I think we all know that the city has been seen more positive growth than many imagined. Downtown is booming with new housing and entertainment. Outsiders are starting to recognize the changes.

Thinking of moving back to the Lynchburg area. I lived there in the late 70's through the late 80's. I attended both Lynchburg Christian Academy and Liberty University. Thomas Road Church has done a lot for the community. I found that when I was there, about half of Lynchburg liked the Falwells and half did not.
I found the people to be nice and friendly. I've been back there off and on to visit as I still have family and friends in the area.
I'm not much of a 'city' person anymore and would prefer one of the smaller surrounding towns (close to Lynchburg) like Rustburg, Evington, more so than living right in the city but I'm open.

I just want people to know what a nice city Lynchburg is. Merry Christmas folks.

Why would you resurrect a thread from 2010?
