Check out these two wildly conflicting assessments ...

walk score = 86 ---> https://www.walkscore.com/score/staunton-virginia
walk score = 35 ---> https://www.walkscore.com/VA/Staunton

Which one is accurate?

It has been a while since I've been in Staunton. Downtown Staunton was walkable if you wanted to go to restaurants, bars and novelty type shops. But at that time you could not easily walk to a grocery store.

You can look at the shop in downtown, dine in downtown play in in downtown and the downtown pedestrian map on this website and get an idea of walkability:

Shop Staunton First | Staunton Downtown Development Association

I would not want to live in Staunton without a car.
Good luck.

I agree. The downtown area: Yes. The rest of it, not so much.

They both are. The first score is centered solely on downtown Staunton, which is very walkable. The second score is an average of the entire city (it's urban, suburban, and rural components).

As others have chimed in, if you theoretically lived close to downtown Staunton, you could easily walk to a variety of dining and (mostly) boutique shopping destinations. However, errands that involve trips to the grocery store or for basic necessities will involve getting into a car and driving down Route 11 or Route 250 away from downtown.
