We want to retire and I've spent a lot of time on the internet and have visited both cities. I would love to know those who have actually lived in these cities, which do you like better and why? I read a companion that Winchester had a higher crime rate and the cost of living was higher. I will be retiring and while my income will be adequate, I'm certainly not rich.

It's hard to really say since you didn't really give much info. I live near Winchester and I like both cities. The nod may have to go to Winchester due to activities for seniors but I'm sure Staunton has plenty as well. As far as crime Winchester is like any growing area. The crime is generally located in a few areas and these are typically the low income areas. Don't live in one of them and you'll likely have no issues. Staunton gets the nod for being located at the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Beautiful areas if the outdoor is important to you. They both really have more pluses than negatives.

Bigfoot, where are the low income areas? I’m moving to Winchester soon, want a decent area to live. Thanks.

One of them is, North Kent Street (near the White House applesauce factory).

Was gonna say... They're pretty obvious when you see them... And you can always live outside of the City of Winchester in Frederick County. Plenty of housing going up all over.
