Default Where to live in VA? 28yo Medical Consultant.

I am moving to VA for a job that I will cover VA,DC and MD soon. I can live anywhere in VA. Where would be a good location for a young professional?

Thanks!

If you want to be near a metro and can afford it - Arlington County would be good for you, along the Orange line, e.g., Ballston, Clarendon, Courthouse. Another option is near Crystal City, if you like high rise apartments. There are a lot of people your age in both areas.

What are you looking for in topography? Coastal? Rolling hills? Mountains?

I would like kind of a mix if possible. I would like to live in a newer city and newer apartment style. I am moving from Miami, FL so a change is welcome.

Thanks for the response!

VA will definitely be a big change from Miami! If you think you will miss the beach a lot, look into VA Beach. I assume that since you will be covering VA, DC, and MD with your job that you will be doing some traveling around a little? So it might make sense to stay near convenient highways?
There's not a whole lot in the way of "new cities" in VA. But there are places that are more "vibrant" and "youthful" than others. You might want to look into Charlottesville. College town with lots of "old class" real close to Shenandoah Nat'l Park, mountain views, easily head to the beach for a weekend whenever you want, and convenient access to DC and MD. Welcome to 4 real seasons!

Yes, UVA is there. It's got a kind of funky, really pretty, and vibrant downtown college scene. Like I said...close to Shen Nat Park...so if you like outdoors stuff, there's hiking, camping, etc galore. You would be near main "arteries" as well...towards Richmond, DC, and MD.
I guess you could look at it this way...
VA's main cities are Charlottesville, Roanoke, Richmond, and VA Beach. That's how I see it...others may disagree. Richmond is the "next stop south" from DC on I-95. Personally, I think Richmond is, well...not that great. (That's putting it gently.) Especially with it's higher cost of living. I don't have any real background with VA Beach. Roanoke is pretty great...lots of threads here on Roanoke (even it's own sub-forum). Low cost of living, mountains, amenities, lots of good folks, etc. But it might be a little too far south if you'll need to drive north and east a lot. So Charlottesville would be a happy medium.

Smile Roanoke!!

Geeze! You dont have much time!!... Figureing out where to live in a big deal. I have lived in Richmond and now Roanoke. I agree Roanoke is quite a hike from dc. Richmond is nice but I grew up there and just got tired of it. For someone your age downtown Richmond (the fan) is a great place, lots to do in the way of nightlife. Roanoke suites me better, laid back souther charm, and cheap. If it were me Id leave Miami and be in Roanoke as fast as I could get here.. I visited Miami last summer and couldnt wait to get back here. Trust me there is nothing like small town living! Its great!!! Good luck to you!
