I posted that earlier this year in January and no, I can't say much has changed. But on the plus side, we're getting a new grocery store called Lidl, so there's that. There's also the basics like Target, Food Lion, Marshalls, etc., and I'll give credit where credit is due, they've done a pretty decent job at renovating the "River District".

There's a lot of churches, but there's also a lot of crime and the local economy is in a bad way, with a cabinet manufacturer laying off many of their employees being the most recent example. Traffic is horrendous for a small city, especially on US-29 Business (Piney Forest Road) and US-58 Business (Riverside Drive). The healthcare is pretty poor with one of the worst hospitals in the state. A lot of the locals tend to be rude towards outsiders. We met a few people that were friendly, but most of those were transplants themselves. I've been in the same house since 2011 and I still couldn't tell you who my neighbors are. We moved here from eastern North Carolina a few years ago because we had a relative that lived here, who had lung cancer. He passed away nearly 2 years ago. We're currently working on trying to move back to NC.

Now, the outskirts beyond the city limits in Pittsylvania County aren't too bad, but unless you're retired and don't have serious medical issues, I would strongly suggest looking elsewhere.

Thank you for the tip about Pittsylvania County. I am retired, want to own my own home for under $25k, and I wouldn't go to a conventional doctor if you paid me. Well, my "unconventional doctor" keeps me in fine health, thank you.

I used to invest in homes and fix them up, so I can do cosmetic and some structural fixes in my own time.

The hardest part is finding someone who will lend me the $25k and take it out of my social security check. I would be paying less than I pay now for rent here in Connecticut, and I have no other bills.

From what I've heard Lidl's is similar to Aldi's.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

You may want to look into the more rural areas of Chesapeake or even VA Beach. I'm not sure what you mean by not your average family, do you have 13 children? Otherwise you're not likely to attract much attention.
