As if there weren't enough problems in southside VA...

https://martinsvilledaily.com/2017/0...s-lay-off-150/

Quote:
Over 150 SOVAH Health employees are losing their jobs in Southside. The layoffs will affect 91 Danville employees and 67 Martinsville employees, according to a Virginia Warn notice. Both layoffs are effective November 6. WSLS reported in June that the Danville and Martinsville hospitals were becoming one, called SOVAH Health, with the hospitals acting as SOVAH Health’s Danville and Martinsville campuses. The merger was expected to take several months to complete.

A Patrick County hospital that earlier filed for bankruptcy protection is closing its doors. Pioneer Community Hospital in Stuart is going out of business, although the exact date of the closure has not been announced. In a statement, Hospital Administrator Jeanette Filpi says the administration has worked to structure a sale for the hospital but has been unable to find a buyer since filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection at the end of March. She says that leaves owner Pioneer Health Services with “no choice but to close the hospital at this time.” The doctor hired last year to lead the hospital’s clinic submitted his resignation on July 31, effective at the end of September. The hospital’s ER is no longer accepting patients. Her statement added that all acute care patients in the hospital will be cared for on-site until they are stable enough to be discharged or transferred. The clinic will also continue to see patients already scheduled, up until the last day. All scheduled outpatient visits end Friday.

I saw that on my local news as well.

The whole medical system sure is turning up-side-down in this country.

Not knowing a whole lot of "why" on this subject, I just did a little quick research and found this below.

And ask me why I'm not surprised:

I have noticed health systems in several states merging. Obamacare is a reason. On the flip side, I hope there are more options for specialized care.

Obamacare ‘designed’ to close rural hospitals
Hmmm... it cuts both ways though. People should do their research. Hospital after hospital in rural America was on the verge of closing or was closing due to lack of business. These areas became so poor that essentially people stopped going to the hospital unless they absolutely had to. Then Obamacare came along, which most of these people in these areas then enrolled in, and business got better for a brief moment.

So I don't think you can blame it 100% on Obamacare, this has been a problem in the making for quite sometime, Obamacare was only a temporary band-aid that couldn't fix a long term and much more systemic problem.

Hospitals are growing in nearby Roanoke and Lynchburg. In this case bigger=better. Also UVa and UNC/Duke attract many more complex cases with high fees. Not much left.
