Monied churches bring salvation? Little bit of "monied" snobbery?
I know what you are trying to say Badger, but thats how it came across. No offense at your description.

I just said the church buildings were nicer--did not say if it helped or not. I found where you went to church was much more important in Virginia than Seattle. It's a major method of social stratification. Even old line Episcopal is not enough--they have an Anglican church.

These discussions always go round and round,it could all be solved by the original person asking questions that do not belittle or put down the regions pride. Is there racism in Maine? Sure, bigotry and intolerance also, and I am sure many of the same things that inflict the South, West and East and other Northern places too.
Being born in the South I can attest to many of its drawbacks, but I have no shame in living here. Charlottesville is a great place (have lived there), whether you are rich or poor. Maine is a great place, little bit cold, but otherwise no better, no worse than here.
So , if the original poster still detests the "South" per se, after all this, and since you have already experienced the South, may I suggest a state, sunny and warm, liberal ,little racism, little sexism, and no religious bigotry , then try Utopia.

I think they are only drawbacks if you don't like that type of dominant lifestyle. Likewise Seattle is no place for a conservative steeplechase and Makers Mark loving guy in khakis and a bow-tie.

Charlottesville is far, far better them most places in the South. The confederate flag waiving, Nascar watching Redneck is actually is a minority there. Since it is the home to the University of Virginia and is quite close to Northern Virginia, the original old school southern population has been “infiltrated” by Yankees and foreigners for quite a while now. I would seriously recommend a visit before you rule it out.

As some one who is one of these “snobby foreigners” I have to say I am quite perplexed when it comes to the whole concept that people of the southern US are NOT snobby?? In Lynchburg for example it is quite hard to find a job if you are not from that area (especially if you do not have a southern accent). IS that not a kind of snobbery? I have more then once been told that “white people should not eat sushi….it is not white food”. Hello, is that not snobbery? Please explain how this works. My son once said he liked banana ice cream and was told “around here we do not eat fancy stuff like that”. To me that is definitely a kind of snobbery. An acquaintance asked me how my family was doing, so I told him. I had just received a text message from my brother who had beaten his own personal record as he ran a marathon. This person proceeds to tell me how this proves my brother has no brain, as why run when you can drive. I answered that I think he enjoys keeping fit and likes the challenge. I then get a lecture how people who exercise can get hart attacks too…………….so I just nodded and was sorry I had opened my mouth.
I once offered a guest to fry up some of yesterdays boiled potatoes and some sausage for breakfast. The guests told me he would take the sausage but not the fried potatoes as that was Yankee food. When I visit people I eat what they offer me and I absolutely do not say stuff like that.
Is this not signs of snobbery as well? Please explain how all this works. It seems that when people form northern US show up they are perceived as rude and snobby. When southerners are rude, it is just fine because they are just “plain ol country folk”..or how does it work? Please explain to this snobby foreigner so I fully understand and can enjoy southern living to the fullest.

.....And then in the next breath we claim that southerners have no sense of humor. Completely missing all that which flew right over our heads.
