Northern Virginia and along the coast the prices ae quite high. If you head towards the center of the state things get MUCH cheeper.....but then you have to put up with a bad job market, confederate flags, Monster Truck fans etc, etc......

Then avoid the center of Virginia. If you move there, the people of central Va will have to put up with people that don't like the area and instead of helping improve the area, just be a burden.

Default Affordability

Its obvious Virginia is a diverse state and isn't it interesting that the closer one gets to Washington DC the more expensive everything is? A lot of people there are living "high on the hog" in the "nations' capital" at OUR expense!! Maryland was just named the wealthiest state in the U.S. and Northern Virginia incomes are way up there. Get the Mercedes out of the garage Binky I'm going shopping in Georgetown!

They don't want to improve things. If they did, it might get better.

Cool Redneckin it in Roanoke.. Give me a break!

And I guess Mr.Jonas sees us Redneck Roanokers gettin' in our Big Red neck monster trucks and headin' down to the swamp for a lil' mud boggin'.. Meanwhile those Nova's are headin' to the mall in their Mercedes. Give me a break!! I think its so funny how everyone thinks this area is so redneck.. Its really not as much of that around here as people make it out to be. The neighborhood I live in is full of mercedes and bmws.

I think they're allowed to sell Mercedes to rednecks now. They've reprinted the "Who to Sell To" manuals at the dealerships.

Actually, he said "the center of the state", so he must not be talking about Roanoke.
But if he was...
I really think Roanoke is actually very non-redneck. I see the folks around town as being more the "genteel, southern-reserved type". Now, outside of Roanoke can be a different story...
But a great thing about this area is that, if you want, you can drive your BMW to a fancy dinner at a private club on SML after an afternoon of mud bogging somewhere out in the sticks!

I live outside Lynchburg..............and I don't know anyone who has a Mercedes or a BMW. Roanoke is not THAT Redneck...just a lil' bit
As for Lynchburg, Danville, Appomattox, Pulaski etc, etc...different story!

You know, ever since this thread was originally started, I've gone back and forth on whether or not to really blast the original poster for never returning to add info to their thread. Amongst other things.
But instead of being all negative, I guess what I'd really like to know is...
"How do people afford to live in places other than VA?!"
Now I know that's pretty general, and of course there are other places with a reasonable cost of living.
But if getting the most out of life without breaking the bank is of any importance, VA is a pretty great place to be! And I am referring to the sw part of VA. NoVA seems to be taking cues from it's uber-expensive cousin NYC. Coastal VA, I assume, is suffering from the afflictions and expense of almost all American coastal areas. And Richmond, well...
Richmond, to me, is just the next overcrowded, crime-infested, overpriced stop heading south on I95 from DC. Who needs all the crime, traffic, overcrowding, keep-up-with-the-Jones' stuff? I'd rather hang out with some horses, or get out in some quiet woods and mountains.

i am moving from VA if my ex doesn't fight me on it. The housing prices are ridiculous I am am a single mom and in order to pay a $1200 rent i would have to work day and night. Which is why i live with my parents who are willing to help with such stuff. But it is ridiculous because ppl think that everyone who lives here are doctors or lawyers. And GOOD LUCK trying to get assistance because VA has a really bad habit of running ppl in circles when it comes to that because they assume the worst of everyone. And with job opportunities diminishing i am planning my move because Virginia is getting horrible. My parents have lived in VA for about 15yrs and have been trying to afford a house since then even with saving money they can't get a mortgage and when they can they would have to pay way to much a month to afford it. So housing prices have been getting like they are it is just that ppl have ignored the problem for so long it is just now creeping up on em.
