I often drive I-77 from West Virginia to Columbia,SC and the worse part of the trip for me is the West Virginia Turnpike from Beckley to Charleston. The rest of the ride really isn't too bad.

I drove through the area when I moved from New Hampshire to South Carolina in December 2015. It was about 2:00 in the afternoon. When you approach it you keep seeing signs of 'dense fog ahead'. That was an under statement of the century. I was driving along, in 'typical' fog; then all the sudden the only way I can describe it is someone spray painted my eyes black and threw a big black blanket over my car.The only thing I saw was tail lights in front of me for about 20 seconds and the truckers sand pits they can drive into. I came REAL close to driving into it. Then I saw my GPS. Thank goodness for that! I LITERALLY NEVER looked up or out my windshield; there was no sense in it because it was so dark. I stayed with my eyes on my GPS the entire time because it shows where you are, and the curvy road is illuminated, and shows you what is coming up, it also shows the elevations, and whether you are going up, down, or flat surface. The car I was driving had the built in GPS which did not show near that amount of info, in fact it was not in real time. I took my old old old TomTom; I still can not rely on the built in one (It also got me lost in Scranton, PA for HOURS; even leading me to the back entrance of the airport onto the runway area!!! Then back through an old cemetary to get out of the airport!) There is a rest area when you get thru it all and everyone pulled over just to calm their nerves down! Go to this link: See where the road and fog meet just ahead... thats when it suddenly turned black and you cant see a thing....
