Default Thinking about relocating to the Staunton area

My husband and I are seriously considering sending our severely visually impaired son to the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton - day program. Where we decide to live will depend on finding a good public elementary school where our other son can thrive in second grade. We are happy to entertain all areas within a 10 to 15 mile radius of Staunton. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I just moved to this general area a few years ago, and I find Staunton to be pleasant picturesque small city. The Downtown is viabrant, and housing (though it has increased alot over the past few years) is still within reason...and Charlottesville is just a short drive away...still, for a small city I think Staunton has alot to offer..

I think you will find the public schools in Staunton to your liking as well.

Best of luck, I give Staunton very high marks...

I agree. Staunton is friendly, and the historic downtown area is very nice. It's easier to live in a small city - it's still somewhat affordable and people are friendly. It's close to bigger cities, while having most of what you need very nearby. No traffic, no interstate driving in town... it's pretty ideal for families.

There are four elementary schools within Staunton City. I think if you went to visit all of them and then looked at the achievement scores you will find that McSwain is preferred although all four have their strengths. Other (private) options include the Staunton Montessori School (Staunton Montessori School - Providing primary and elementary education in Staunton, VA) and Hunter McGuire which recently merged with Stuart Hall (Hunter McGuire School, Verona VA).
