OP. I had a long write up for you and lost it. Check Woodstock, VA. Beautiful country and close to me. Big enough town for you with lots to do and close enough to two additional large cities. Harrisonburg and Winchester. I'm trying to attach a view from my porch but this crappy site makes it difficult.

Oh absolutely. Check out the views from some of the local land by selecting for type "lots" on Zillow. Remember that many of the houses in the area have similar views. You could also use the Street View feature on Google Maps and go for a virtual drive. A lot of the really spectacular views are blocked by foliage though.

I'm off once school is out and thinking about driving down to check it out. Seems like a good balance of less snow and not extreme heat in summer.
