After yesterday’s election, is the Republican Party’s base in Virginia limited to the mountain counties?

Even in the mountain counties, their Rep. David Brat, a Republican, just lost to a Democrat.

The 7th congressional district is Piedmont, not really "mountain counties" -- and it has a decent amount of the western edge of the Richmond metro.

Look at the attached map, and you can see which political parties/ideologies are in control in VA counties.

Seems to me it's more the rural/small town - urban/suburban divide - rather than identifying "mountains" versus "non-mountains."

In the Senate election, DEMS did carry Roanoke City, Montgomery County, Lynchburg City, Nelson County, Albemarle County and Charlottesville City which are all mountain or pretty darn close to the mountains

SW Virginia (coal counties/Appalachia) west of Montgomery County has clearly flipped from blue to red, much like many parts of West Virginia.

It seems like Virginia has switched from being a red state to being a blue state. There are seven Democrats and four Republicans in Congress, two Democrats in the Senate and a Democrat Governor. Is this based on a dislike of Donald Trump, or is it more the changing population of voters in Virginia? Several of the new Democratic Congress-people are younger, a few are women!

What is going to happen in the 2020 election? I am curious because I am considering a move to Fredericksburg or Richmond in 5-10 years.

It isn’t just a dislike for Trump. Virginia voted for Obama twice and for HRC. We’ve had two Dem Senators for 20 years (and I don’t think we’ve had two Rep Senators for 40 or more years). A few of the House seats may be due to Trump but two Dem pick ups are due to congressional redistricting (undoing of gerrymandered districts). Dems are poised to take back the Virginia GA and Senate thus November (redistricting maps just upheld by SCOUS this week). Trump’s approval rating in Virginia is in the 30’s. Virginia will be blue until the red team undergoes a radical political shift (which probably can’t be that far off).

So the current top leadership are democrats and looks what's happened with them which of course ids basically being ignored. Now admittedly I'm not overly concerned with the Gov and AG as what they did was immature but not illegal. But the Lt. Gov was accused of some serious charges and where are we right now? I'm certainly not defending Trump as he's often his own worse enemy but VA's blue politicians are proving no better.
